The agrarian conditions and the low relative levels of the socioeconomic indicators cause the area of the “High Jequitinhonha Valley”, in the northeast of the State of Minas Gerais, to be considered one of the most complex areas of Brazil. For this reason several governanmental administrations have recommended rural development programs. Most of these efforts, however, have not produced adequate results. This article analyzes the relationships between public programs and family farming, making a survey of the methods and results of the last three decades. It concludes that there is a need to incorporate the specificities of history, environment and culture into the rural programs. It is suggested that the programs take into consideration the experience... |

This piece of study puts forward an analysis on the repoduction of family-agriculturists by means of the similar evidences found in two rural communities. Both the productive and the reproductive processes are simultaneous, and the continuous re-conversion of part of the production into new means re-creates the social and cultural conditions for the agriculturists' existence. The reproductive effort comes to the fore when one observes how family work is organized, how its successor is elected, how the estate growth occurs, and how they get to new agricultural or non-agricultural activities which will lead them to a financial improvement. This work starts off by presenting the theorical and book references used in the analisys of the studied problem. Later... |

This work analyzes the social relationships of gender, the differentiated valorization of the work accomplished by men and women in Minas’ family farming. The methodology of the research was based on a qualitative approach through the case study in Cachoeirinha community, situated 8 km away from the town of Lavras-MG. Cachoeirinha is mainly inhabited by family-farmers who combine agricultural and non-agricultural business together. Women dedicate themselves household chores, farming, kitchen gardening and small animals. They reckon their household tasks as non profit- generating labor and as part of the female duties. Their subordination to family, husbands/children is explicit. In that rural community, patriarchal power stands out, restricting and... |

This article analyzes the effect of the aging and the retirements in the Brazilian rural scene, which is a question of most importance for the current days, since the relative participation of the aging group in the total set of the Brazilian population is increasing. Thus, there exists a concern with the future of the Social Security sot that it must pass through reforms. Hence, the objective of this paper is to raise elements for the discussion on the importance of the social security in the agricultural sector, since it passes through significant demographic changes. With a sufficiently fragmented history, since the years of the Empire, the Social Security has been extending several segments of society, being one of the most important forms of inclusion... |

This articles discusses aspects of female labour in the strategies developed by farming families from Minas so as to ensure both access to and permanence in farmlands. Case studies have been carried out in two communities- one of which being an old constitution, Boa Vista, in Itaguara, MG, the other being a newly consituted unit, Assentamento Dom Orione, in Betim, MG- where it was possible to observe the importance of women’s role with their struggle and labor in the composition of family strategies. The Boa Vista community has been experiencing changes in the families’ production dynamics due to the decline in income from farming activities, causing handcraft work to gain greater and greater economic importance. Such activity involves all family members,... |

Most studies developed about agrarian societies usually refer to rural space as private space. Nevertheless the concept of “rural property” can raise a host of distinct interpretations, especially when one brings into analysis the interaction among populations and natural resources. This present piece of work aims at going deeper into the establishment of the environmental typology built by family-related agriculturists of two rural communities from Turmalina, MG, and the diversification of use given to each of these environments by their inhabitants. Arrangements on the use and the management of collective resources may come to contributing with the formatting of new projects which seek to promoting the country’s environmental planning, plus allowing for... |

Beginning in the 1970’s the plateaus of Alto Jequitinhonha, northeast of Minas Gerais, until then areas of common use by family farmers, were planted with eucalyptus. This article analyzes the effects of reforestation on land occupation, comparing it with the areas of the family production. It is carried out in the homogenous micro-region of Capelinha, an area with the largest concentration of eucalyptus in the region. Secondary data from the IBGE Census for the years 1970, 1980, 1985 and 1996 were used, and also secondary data from surveys conducted around the region studied, including interviews with management of companies and union leadership. The article concludes that, in thirty years, the reforestation concentrated the land and created reduced... |

This work aims to analize the impacts of the large scale eucalyptus plantation introduction into the areas of Alto Jequitinhonha in the decade of 1970, starting from the several local actors’ depositions, articulated with available literature on the theme. The work is structured in an introduction, a brief on the theoretical composition of the area occupation process for reforestation in the wide climbs, in the methodological procedures and in the presentation and analysis of the social actors’ positioning of the eucalyptus monoculture in Alto Jequitinhonha, considered primordial to understand the impacts of the tax incentives policies, their current reflexes in the regional economy and to visualize proposals of public policies for the development of the... |
